Higginbotham Race Team sets two new World Land Speed Records over 260 MPH!
Wendover, Ut. - Racing at the Bonneville Salt Flats has resulted in two new Land Speed Records set by the Higginbotham Land Speed Racing Team of Bastrop, Texas. Driver and engine partner, Bill Smith of Dallas, Texas set the records in Skip Higginbotham’s land speed racer during Bonneville Speedway race meets in August and September 2001. The new class records are in the AA/GL at 267.459 MPH and AA/FL at 262.063 MPH. The classes are explained as a vehicle having an engine with over 500 cubic inches displacement (AA), using gasoline (G) or other fuels (F) in lakester class (L) which is a car with the wheels and tires completely outside the car body. The car uses a special three-speed transmission and U.S. Gear Corporation Overdrive unit to set the records.
The records were set by timed runs over a five-mile course while under close scrutiny by officials. Each record is established by averaging two high-speed runs over the same racecourse for each record. Technical details of the car are closely checked for certification of the new records.
The race team and lakester are available throughout the winter season for shows, publicity and special appearances.
Goals for next year involve adding engines for yet more record setting efforts.
